چکیده

Studies of how 10 to 11 year old children understand eventbased program descriptions based on comic strips showed that narrative interpretations of such programs were common. A narrative perspective was taken both when using paper prototypes and computer prototypes, but was stronger on paper than on the computer. While a narrative model of programming can interfere with the creation of non-linear simulation-oriented programs, a classroom study showed that the children were able to use a narrative perspective on programming to create story-based games with interactive agents. Thus, visual event-based programming could be an alternative to hypertext authoring for the creation of interactive stories where a dynamic content is considered important.

Concurrent Comics – programming of social agents by children

This thesis presents a study of how the visual language of comics can be used for programming of social agents. Social agents are interactive and animated characters that can express emotions and behaviours in relation to other agents. Such agents could be programmed by children to create learning games and simulations. In order to make programming easier, it would be desirable to support the m...

Non-branching Interactive Comics

Comics are a unique and classical form of storytelling. The advent of interactive narratives brings the possibility of interaction to the traditional comic books. In this paper we present a non-branching interactive comics system capable of generating dynamic interactive narratives in the format of comic books. The system allows users to interact with certain objects, and then observe the conse...

The Formal Semantics of Free Perception in Pictorial Narratives

This paper semantically analyzes “free perception” sequences in pictorial narratives such as comics, where one panel shows a character looking, and the next panel shows what they see. Pictorial contents are assumed to be viewpoint-centered propositions. A framework for the representation of pictorial narratives is used where indexing and embedding of certain panels is characterized by hidden op...

Visual programming with analogical representations: Inspirations from a semiotic analysis of comics

Analogical representations based on pictures of domain objects can be used in visual programming to provide a close mapping between the program and the resulting runtime display, which can make programming easier for children and other users. The use of graphical rewrite rules with before and after pictures is an example of this approach. Graphical rewrite rules have some similarities with comi...

Comic Strip Programs: Beyond Graphical Rewrite Rules

Comics and programs both are static representations of something dynamic. While a comic book almost looks and feels like an animated cartoon, the source code of a program seldom resembles the visible runtime behaviour. By using comic strips to represent concurrent events, graphical programs that feature interactive, animated characters and objects can be expressed in a visually direct way, maki...
